Capability

The ground I have actually worked.

Not a list of interests. Every technology, asset type and contract form below comes off a project on the delivery record, in a role where I carried the consequences of getting it wrong — and the seven things at the foot of the page are the ones worth testing against anybody’s record, mine included.

Process technologies

  • APCI C3MR, DMR and SMR LNG liquefaction
  • ConocoPhillips Optimized Cascade LNG liquefaction
  • Baker Hughes small-scale LNG liquefaction
  • LNG regasification — air, water and hybrid vaporization
  • Topsoe ammonia/hydrogen
  • BASF and Honeywell UOP gas pretreatment

Asset types

  • Onshore liquefaction and regasification
  • FLNG and FSRU vessels
  • Conversion of LNG carriers into Floating Storage Units (FSUs)
  • LNG road transportation vehicles
  • Offshore platforms and subsea pipelines
  • Simple cycle and CCGT power generation — industrial and aero-derivative gas turbines, reciprocating gas engines and steam turbines (Siemens, GE, Caterpillar and Solar Turbines)
  • Modular fabrication, to the largest onshore mega-modules built
  • Greenfield and brownfield facilities

Commercial & contracting

  • Bidders list development, RFP and ITT preparation, evaluation criteria and scoring, clarification and bid evaluation, through to final selection
  • EPC&C contract negotiation and execution management
  • Development and negotiation of joint venture, joint development and time charter party agreements
  • Lump sum, provisional sum and reimbursable contracting strategies
  • Claims, variation and change control
  • Project financing and lenders’ assurance

Risk, assurance & governance

  • Enterprise and project risk management
  • Quantified cost and schedule risk analysis, and contingency setting
  • HSSE and quality assurance & control
  • Technical assurance and independent verification
  • Interface management
  • Insurance management
  • FID readiness
  • Project performance reporting

Done, not observed

Seven things I have actually done.

They separate people who have delivered a megaproject from people who have worked on one — including senior people who carried a function, a package or a phase, but never the whole of it.

  1. 01

Been the single named person accountable for executing a multi-billion-dollar project.Three times — Energía Costa Azul LNG, Woodfibre LNG and the Hong Kong Offshore LNG Terminal — not once.

  2. 02

Carried the responsibility for every worker on site going home safely to their family, with a record that stands up.24 million work hours without a lost-time injury, directly accountable.

  3. 03

Prepared a project for FID and then lived every day of delivering against what I promised. The estimate and schedule I defended at sanction were the ones I then had to hit.

  4. 04

Been the company's representative on a multi-billion-dollar EPC contract, solely accountable for managing it through execution. Not one of the people helping to manage it, and not a senior manager accountable for it at a distance. EPC&C lump sum, provisional sum and reimbursable, to approximately $10 billion.

  5. 05

Built a project management system fit for the project in front of me and implemented it.Rather than inheriting one that was never tailored to the job, and defending it while it failed.

  6. 06

Run construction from site. Not read reports about it.

  7. 07

Worked every project phase, so a lesson from commissioning changes how I shape the FEED.Concept selection, FEED, FID readiness, EPC execution, commissioning and operations — the matrix on the track record page shows which phase on which project.
